Farmers say new Qld laws won’t stop CSG boom

Farmers and environmental lobby groups have strongly criticised Queensland’s Labor state government for claiming that new legislation protect the state’s best agricultural land from mining.

Natural Resources Minister Rachel Nolan said the Strategic Cropping Land Act came into affect yesterday and would protect the best agricultural land.

“This legislation means that our best land will now be protected for agriculture forever,” she said in a statement.

AAP newsagency says the government media release provided little detail about what the legislation will actually mean.

At the same time the announcement had farmers and environmental lobby groups angry.
