EXXON Mobil seems to have narrowed the potential time between first oil and gas production at its Turrum gas field in Bass Strait from four years to three years amid a buoyant outlook for east coast gas demand.
When Exxon approved the (then) $1.4 billion Turrum project in 2008, it said first production would come four years after first targeted oil output of last year.
With the platform that will process the oil and gas (the 19th built by Exxon and partner BHP Billiton in Bass Strait) still a year or so from completion, and talks with Gladstone LNG exporters flagged, Turrum gas could be in the system in 2016, three years after a delayed first oil date.
The joint venture has confirmed it is targeting 2016 for completion of a plant to remove carbon dioxide from Turrum gas, after which gas from the plant could be sold.
