The oil and gas industry's peak body has dismissed the latest Newspoll survey showing the majority of Queenslanders fail to support coal seam gas extraction
.
Forty per cent of voters said they were not in favour of the coal seam gas industry, while 27 per cent remain uncommitted to the issue, the Newspoll published in The Australian newspaper yesterday showed.
The survey revealed just 30 per cent of Queenslanders were in favour of the sector.
Those not in favour of coal seam gas were not aligned politically - Labor and LNP voters opposed it almost equally.
A spokesman for the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association, which represents the country's chief mining companies, said the survey effectively showed one third of Queenslanders opposed coal seam gas extraction, while one third were in favour it of and the remaining third were undecided.
