Conservationists rally against Qld mine

A mine company’s promise to move a rail loading facility away from a southeast Queensland town is just shifting the problem, conservationists argue.

Drew Hutton, president of land rights alliance Lock the Gate, will join politicians and the son of rural identity R.M. Williams to march on southeast Queensland’s Acland mine coal dump next Monday.
New Hope Group, who own the mine, is seeking government approval for stage three of its mining project.
However, Mr Hutton says this will be disastrous as the current operation will double in size.
In return for the third stage going ahead, New Hope has promised to move its rail loading facility eight kilometres further from the town of Jondaryan.

But Mr Hutton has said he is still opposed to the project. It was necessary to stop the mine and not allow New Hope to shift problems elsewhere, he said.

‘‘We’re going to close this dump,’’ Mr Hutton said.‘‘We’re going to stop the trucks.
