Bob Katter wants Queensland government to ban foreign mine labour

MAVERICK federal independent Bob Katter says the Queensland government should not issue mining permits to companies intending to use foreign workers.
Mr Katter, leader of the start-up Katter's Australian Party, said the move towards a fly-in, fly-out domestic mining workforce was destroying the "social and economic fabric" of small mining communities and the situation would be worse with overseas workers.

"The permit to mine would not be issued and regulations would state you can't bring people in from overseas," Mr Katter said yesterday before addressing a House of Representatives committee in Cairns investigating the impact of FIFO workers.

"There are very serious workplace safety reasons for this -- language is a very important issue in a mine."
