Bacchus Marsh: Pregnant woman chains herself to coal drilling rig

UPDATE 12.40pm: BACCHUS Marsh police are still at the scene of an anti-coal exploration protest.

Quit Coal activist Paul Connor said he was locked to the top of the drilling rig while Natasha Mills was locked to the base of the rig while eight other protesters were continuing with their picnic.

Mr Connor said four police were in attendance and he understood they were waiting for a Moorabool Council representative to attend and revoke their right to be on the public land before police could ask them to move.

UPDATE 11.30am: A PREGNANT Bacchus Marsh woman who chained herself to a drilling rig this morning said mining workers stopped when protesters entered the site and advised them against protesting before calling the police.

Natasha Mills, who is seven-and-a-half months pregnant, said she felt the amount of money Mantle Mining had spent on exploration drilling was an indication a coal mine was going to go ahead and she was concerned about the lack of community consultation.

“A lot of people are in disbelief this is happening,’’ Ms Mills said.

“You don’t spend $1-2 million on exploratory drilling without a reason, there are too many indicators that this is going ahead.’’
