BROADCASTER Alan Jones has told a crowd of 250 people protesting against a coal mine at Jondaryan on Queensland's Darling Downs that food security is the biggest issue facing Australia.

New Hope mining company is seeking permission to go ahead with stage 3 of its Acland mine, and Jones today joined other speakers, including federal MPs Bob Katter and Senator Larissa Waters from the Greens, in opposing the mine.

“These people are mongrels, out and out mongrels,” he said.

“With the farmer, you've got all this legislation, you can't do anything, but the mining companies can do anything they like,” Jones said.

“Miners don't have to pay for their water, farmers do. Farmers can't cut down trees, miners can.”
After several speeches, the crowd then marched to New Hope's coal depot at Jondaryan, where the gate was locked.
