The Association of Australian Mining and Exploration Companies say the proposal to declare the Georgina and Diamantina Rivers as Wild Rivers will prevent new mineral discoveries.
But environmental groups say the legislation does not go far enough and they would like to see it exclude Coal Seam Gas extraction too.
The environmental groups have launched a full page advertising campaign in a rural newspaper to explain the benefits of Wild Rivers.
