Submissions by an Australian activist group to two parliamentary inquiries into coal bed methane projects have been condemned by Australia’s petroleum industry body after portions of it were found to refer to a different form of gas.
In both cases the submissions, from the group Lock the Gate Alliance, copied from a letter published in the journal Climactic Change in March this year, replacing the words “shale gas” with the Australian term for coal bed methane, “coal seam gas”.
The letter, co-authored by Robert Howarth, Renee Santoro and Anthony Ingraffea, looked at the greenhouse gas footprint of natural gas obtained by high volume hydraulic fracturing from shale formations in the United States.
