MELBOURNE -(Dow Jones)- BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) plans immediate discussions with the government of Australia's New South Wales state over its plans to hike coal mining royalties, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
The Melbourne-based mining giant is seeking "clarity around the proposed royalty increases and [to] ensure there are no unintended consequences of the proposal," spokeswoman Fiona Martin said in an emailed response to questions.
The island-nation's most populous state plans to raise coal royalties for those companies that will be hit by a planned federal government tax of 30% on iron ore and coal from next year, echoing plans in May by Western Australia to raise A$1.9 billion over the next four years by increases to state iron ore royalties.
