PERTH (MarketWatch) -- Australia's Santos Ltd. said Wednesday it has shut down production at its Mutineer-Exeter oil field due to Tropical Cyclone Heidi, which is threatening the northwest coast of Western Australia.
"As a consequence of Heidi, we have shut-in production and are preparing for disconnection at the Mutineer-Exeter oil project depending on the cyclone's development," a Santos spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires.
Heidi is moving in a southerly direction towards the Pilbara coast, and could produce gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour close to the center as it crosses the coast overnight, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology said on its website.
The Pilbara region hosts several major oil and gas fields along with Australia's biggest iron ore mines and export facilities.
Santos owns 33.4% of Mutineer-Exeter, which produced 250,000 barrels of oil in the three months to Sept. 30, and is operator.
