A NEW energy blueprint pins the nation's economic prosperity on a massive expansion in the use of gas and warns that nuclear power will have to be considered if clean energy technologies fail to become cost-effective.
The release of the government's draft energy white paper yesterday widened the rift between Labor and the Greens on energy policy.
Greens deputy leader Christine Milne declared the document was on "a collision course" with the carbon tax package she negotiated with Julia Gillard. The white paper forecasts that Australia could become the world's most important uranium supplier and that coal production will continue to grow for at least the next decade, but Australia has only 10 years of oil production left and domestic refineries face closure.
