The Opposition is claiming credit for the idea of a northern food bowl re-emerging on Australia's political agenda.
The Federal Government today revealed a $10 million plan to trial irrigation agriculture with water from two Gulf of Carpentaria rivers.
The Government will trial irrigation projects for beef and crop development on the Flinders and Gilbert Rivers.
But Barnaby Joyce, the Opposition's spokesman for water and regional development, says the Coalition has already proposed large-scale dams for both rivers.
He says today's announcement is a "scaled down, miniature version of the Coalition's policy".
"I'm happy if the Coalition is driving the agenda for things that are good for our nation ... that's a good outcome," he said.
