Coal power may retain its appeal as gas prices rise

AN expected rise in gas prices will mean that coal-powered stations will remain attractive, according to the Bureau of Resource and Energy Economics.
The government forecaster yesterday released its long-term energy projection report.

It predicts that gas-fired power will grow from comprising 16 per cent of the nation's power in 2008-09 to 36 per cent in 2034-35.

At the same time, coal's share is predicted to fall from 74 per cent to just 38 per cent.

But the report says the outlook for gas prices is highly uncertain, due in part to expected price rises as Queensland's planned $60 billion coal-seam gas export industry takes off.
