INDUSTRIOUS: Regional Development Australia Southern Inland chairman Ken Prendergast, his board and staff toured two of Marulan’s major developments on Monday, including Marulan South limestone mine with manager Les Longhurst
ON Monday members of a regional development committee boarded the aptly named ‘youth bus,’ community transport purchased with the Veolia Mulwaree Trust’s help.
The bus took them and Regional Development Australia Southern Inland staff and council representatives to two massive Marulan hardrock quarries in the making.
Together the Holcim and Boral enterprises total $650 million in investment, no small drop in the ocean, says Marulan man David Humphreys.
By the same token, he feels these companies and numerous others establishing quarries and gas fired power stations around the town have an obligation to put something back. Mr Humphreys told the Post he found the current commitment “unnerving.”
“If they all got together and set up a scheme similar to Veolia’s we would have the money to improve the local hall etc and make Marulan a great place to live and work,” he said.
The Marulan and District Chamber of Commerce president is also the community’s voice on Holcim Quarry’s consultative committee.
