Immigration Minister Chris Bowen has reportedly been in talks with mining companies about replacing 457 visas with bulk temporary migration agreements, under which workers could be flown in directly from overseas.
Several mining companies have made confidential submissions to the government on the issue, as Queensland grapples with an estimated shortage of 40,000 workers, The Courier-Mail reported today.
Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has purchased Rockhampton beef baron Graeme Acton's Moray Downs cattle station for about $110 million and plans to build Australia's biggest operating coal mine by 2022.
The property covers one-third of resources in the Galilee Basin.
