An independent study commissioned by the Remote Area Planning and Development board found 53 per cent of people want more balanced information.
The need for more information may be a reason why 40% of respondents did not see any benefits to coal seam gas activities in Central West Queensland, while another 42% of the respondents stated there could be economic and employment benefits.
With regards to coal mining, 70% of the Central West thought that industry would bring economic benefits, however interestingly in the Barcaldine area, 77% saw no benefits to coal mining.
The regions communities were very concerned about damage to the artesian basin and associated water impacts, while just over half of the respondents mentioned the impact on grazing and agriculture as the main negative impact of coal mining activities.
Cr Ed Warren Chair of RAPAD said the research highlighted the need for the CSG and coal mining sector, along with the State Government, to be far more active in their engagement practices with Central West communities.
