State land-use plan criticised: NSW

The NSW Government's new strategic land-use plan has been criticised by coal seam gas opponents as well as gas company Metgasco.

Local opponents of the coal seam gas industry say the State Government's new strategic land-use plan has done nothing to allay their fears.

Boudicca Cerese, from the Northern Rivers Lock the Gate Alliance, says the government has broken a key election promise and failed to protect valuable farming land.

Any proposal to mine on or near newly mapped strategic agricultural land will need to be approved by an independent scientific panel.

But Ms Cerese says the government can bypass that process.

"Even if a project has to go through the scientific panel, and we're not sure what the composition of that is going to be, it still leaves it open for the Cabinet to override the decision of the panel and give the go-ahead," she said.
