Dredge levy will make reef a dump: Greens

The federal government's plan to charge a levy for dredge spoils to be dumped in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park will turn it into a rubbish tip, the Greens say.

Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke is currently considering a proposal to charge between $5 and $15 for each cubic metre of spoil disposed of in the marine park.

Greens Senator Larissa Waters said allowing companies to dispose of their dredge spoil risked doing serious damage to the reef.
