NSW Finance Minister says it would cost billions of dollars to revoke CSG licences

The New South Wales Finance Minister says it would cost billions of dollars in compensation to shut down coal seam gas operations in the Illawarra and across the state.

Greg Pearce faced questions at a public meeting in Wollongong on Thursday night as to why the government can't shut down coal seam gas operations while an investigations continue into its impact on water resources.

Mr Pearce says the current government hasn't issued any new licences, and it would be very costly to revoke previous licences.

"A lot of people want us to do something retrospective", he said.

Governments are very reluctant to retrospectively take rights away.
