CSG miners stumped on penalties

A KEY mining figure has refused to nominate what penalties should be applied to coal seam gas companies which pollute aquifers.

However Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association Eastern Australia chief operating officer Rick Wilkinson says any company polluting or contaminating the environment "should be held fully and completely accountable".
"They should face the full consequences of the law," Mr Wilkinson said at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences Outlook conference.
However he did not directly answer a specific question from The Weekly Times on whether financial penalties should be linked to the annual turnover of the company involved.
Mr Wilkinson said a third of the gas being burned in eastern Australia was already coming from CSG operations.
