AGL defends groundwater studies

Katya Quigley spoke to AGL's Manager of Hydrology to get the company's perspective on groundwater and surface water conditions in Gloucester.

It's not just the prospect of an open cut coal mine on the outskirts of town that has divided the community of Gloucester. It is also coal seam gas, with first stage approval to build up to 110 bores, and the potential for up to three times that number.

One of the concerns about coal seam gas drilling in Gloucester is the potential impact on the water supply and the excess salt water that will be produced as a by-product of the extraction process.

In February Katya Quigley spoke to Professor Phillip Pells, an independent groundwater engineer who reviewed AGL's report investigating groundwater and surface water conditions within the Stage 1 Gas Field Development Area.
