Pipeline Route ‘Intolerable’

LANDHOLDERS in the North West are upping the ante in their fight against plans for a natural gas pipeline scheduled to run from Narrabri to Wellington.

Farmers have suggested they would physically block Eastern Star Gas (ESG) from their properties if its proposed pipeline is not rerouted from cutting through agricultural land to alongside the Newell Highway.

Construction of the pipeline, which would take gas from Narrabri to Wellington via Coolah and then on to Newcastle, is scheduled to be started within two years, and discussions with landholders have been continuing for the best part of a year.

But Mullaley Gas Pipeline Accord chairman, David Quince, believes the present route would destroy quality agricultural land.

“We find this route for the pipeline intolerable,” Mr Quince said.
