Fringe Farms in Food Fight as Growers Fear Hunger for CSG

THEY are the fringe dwellers who feed Sydney - now they are at risk of being gobbled up.
The "suburban" farmers whose small vegetable plots criss-cross the outer rim of the Sydney basin are girding themselves for war against coal seam gas (CSG) companies creeping ever closer to the city.

Responsible for producing about 80 per cent of perishable vegetables eaten by Sydneysiders -- an industry worth more than $1 billion -- the farmers gathered last night in Penrith to voice their fears.

If, as they expect, mining development starts to ramp up in western Sydney, the impact on the local food supply would lead to more imported fruit and vegies, the group told the Can't Eat Your House food bowl forum hosted by Sydney Food Fairness Alliance.
