Windsor's Retrospective Bill Bid to Stall Mines

RURAL independent Tony Windsor has proposed retrospective legislation that would give the federal government oversight over coal and gas projects that could have an impact on water resources.

Mr Windsor yesterday introduced a private member's bill that would trigger the federal Environmental Protection Biodiversity and Conservation Act when there was potential damage to water resources. The bill prohibits "mining action that has, will have or is likely to have a significant impact on the water quality, structural integrity or the hydraulic balance of a water resource".
