Bishop would lock the gate to miners

The Anglican Bishop of Gippsland, John McIntyre has formulated a position on coal seam gas exploration in the region.

Bishop McIntyre told ABC Gippsland's Mornings Program he is unsure whether coal seam gas extraction is safe and therefore the Victorian Government had an obligation to test the environmental impact of extraction methods.

He said if he was a landowner, he would lock the gate to mining companies if they wanted access to his land.

"I would lock the gate and I would invite my neighbours to do the same," Bishop McIntyre said.
"I would gather together with them and negotiate with them so that we had a base to negotiate with the companies when they press their rights."

Bishop McIntyre spelled out his position in detail in the August edition of The Gippsland Anglican newspaper.
