Groups unite against coal and gas threat

Landholders and concerned community members from some 20 different groups across north-west NSW and beyond gathered in Narrabri on the weekend to share knowledge, build relationships and begin work on strategies to halt the expansion of coal and coal seam gas mining across the northwest of NSW.

“This weekend, representatives from many different and diverse groups came together to talk about the severe risks that coal and gas mining poses to north-western NSW” said Carmel Flint from the Northern Inland Council for the Environment.

“The recent evidence of toxic spills of coal seam gas water in the Pilliga and reports of dams failing at local coal mines during the recent flood events has dramatically escalated our concerns about the impacts of mining. It has prompted us to unite to fight this growing threat” she said.
