The Government wants explorers to look for oil and gas in a large area of the
Waikato.
As part of its new annual "block offer" it has identified 25 blocks covering
40,000sq km that could be put up for competitive tender this year.
Most areas are offshore but 5704sq km of land in Waikato, Taranaki, Tasman,
the West Coast and Southland could be up for exploration.
The Waikato block covers 2700sq km and stretches from the Waikato River at
Cambridge in the northeast to south of Otorohanga and out to the west coast,
including Kawhia Harbour.
The Ministry of Economic Development is consulting iwi and local government
in the areas where the proposed blocks are located.

Editor's Note: Can you believe this? Perhaps John Keys should give Anna Bligh a call to get the list of "explorers" already decimating Queenland. AAArgh!
