Coal mine comes with town in tow

ELEANOR HALL: Now to the plan by a multibillion dollar Indian company to build a new town in Queensland.

The Adani mining company wants to build the community to house workers for a massive coal mine proposed for central western Queensland.

It would be the largest investment by an Indian company in Australia.

IMOGEN BRENNAN: The Indian based Adani Group calls itself a "business behemoth".

The conglomerate recorded billions of dollars profit last financial year through its interests in oil, gas, mining and infrastructure.

Now it has its sights set on a parcel of land in the Galilee Basin in central western Queensland, which is an area destined to become Queensland's busiest region for coal production.

The company wants to extract 60 million tonnes of coal annually from an open-cut and underground mine about 100 kilometres north of Emerald.
