Members of the Bomaderry Rotary Club will be briefed tonight on the controversial issue of coal seam gas mining, as new claims emerge of possible serious health problems from exposure to the gases in the US.
With a wide area of coast and highlands currently the subject of a coal seam gas exploration licence the study by University of Massachusetts researchers has found exposure to shale gas drilling operations is strongly linked to serious health problems in humans, and animals.
In one case, 17 cows died in one hour from respiratory failure after shale gas fracking fluids were accidentally released into an adjacent paddock.
The potential impacts of CSG mining will be outlined to Bomaderry Rotary Club members at the Bomaderry Bowling club from 6.30pm tonight (Mon).
Chris Williams from CSG Illawarra says the local area is not adequately protected and residents need to be better informed about the potential environmental impacts from this type of mining.
