Stop the drilling

NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson has acknowledged his own Labor Party was responsible for granting the coal seam gas exploration licences that are causing grief among rural communities across the Hunter.

Mr Robertson, in the Hunter yesterday to meet with a group of concerned residents at Majors Lane Restaurant at Keinbah, said the licences were granted when Labor was in power and that Barry O’Farrell’s Liberal government had not approved any further licences since taking power earlier this year.

But Mr Robertson pointed out that the Labor Party had “had a change in leadership” since then and believes “both sides of politics have rushed into this”.

And his message to the state government was to immediately suspend all coal seam gas exploration licenses covering the Hunter until a scientific consensus on its potential impact can be reached. Mr Robertson said the government can suspend the licences until it knows conclusively that water won’t be affected.
