Billions of litres of fresh water from WA would be piped to the Eastern States under an audacious plan to save the Murray-Darling Basin system and its struggling farmers.
The proposal, being pushed by pipeline experts and independent MPs in South Australia, would see a string of pumping stations moving water from WA’s Ord River down through central Australia and into parts of NSW, Victoria and SA.
Key industry players and WA MPs have been briefed on aspects of the 1800km proposal which would be funded through the cash already earmarked to be spent on buying water from struggling irrigators.
One of those behind the proposal, pipeline expert Peter Rayner, said the debate across the Murray-Darling basin over a new report on how to cut existing water allocations proved other ways to help the environment needed to be considered.
