Lively community forum on coal seam gas mining

Protest: Maggie O'Sullivan, Carl Bayer, Michelle Lopert and Ian Oxenford.

THE Johns River Community Hall hosted a lively community forum on the issue of coal seam gas mining.

Forum moderator David Shepard from the Johns River Community Progress Association (JRCPA) said the forum on Saturday was a very lively and well-moderated forum discussing all the issues, from the science and past experiences, to current regulations, and the future of Coal Seam Gas on the Mid North Coast, NSW and in Australia..

“It went quite well and there were some real eye-openers and messages that hadn’t had much penetration,” David said.

“It was a very reasoned and balanced debate on what is a very emotive issue.”

The panel was made up of MP for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams, Newcastle University’s Dr. Gary Ellem, Manning Alliance chairman Peter Epov and former Labor candidate for Port Macquarie Peter Alley.

Invitations were extended to CSG companies, AGL and Santos but both companies were notable absentees from the forum with Mr Shepard describing them as having “gone to ground.”
