ABC responds to CSG industry complaint

The Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) lodged an official complaint about the ABC's website, Coal seam gas: by the numbers. Following is the ABC's public response to that complaint.

APPEA general comments

"The new ABC website is riddled with factual errors. The Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) is seeking clarification regarding how the site Coal seam gas: by the numbers could have been launched without the proper checking of facts, calculations, or claims made."
The complaint's assertion that the site was launched without checking calculations and facts is not true.
The site is based on a range of primary sources including the companies' own environmental impact statements, and state and federal government reports. Where further input and verification was needed the experienced journalists who worked on the site also checked modelling assumptions, calculations and facts with industry experts, including Associate Professor Justin Brookes, director of the Water Research Centre at the University of Adelaide. Brookes is currently project leader on a study in the Murray River estuary within the CRC Reservoir Program. Other independent scientists were also consulted on a background basis. The site was launched with the most up to date publicly available information.
