Strategic plan to protect farms and vines from mining

The New South Wales government has released draft guidelines which it says protect agricultural land in the Hunter Valley and New England regions from mining.

The Draft Strategic Land Use Plan for the Hunter Valley says horse breeding land around Scone and vineyards near Cessnock have been mapped and protected.

The plan for the New England says a large part of the region has been identified as high value agricultural land, including the black soils of the Liverpool Plains.

The government says major mining and coal seam gas proposals within two kilometres of the newly mapped strategic agricultural land will need to go through a new 'gateway' process which will involve an independent scientific panel.
