A protest meeting has been held to discuss the state government's decision to approve the drilling of a coal seam gas well north of Mittagong.
The well is being sunk by Apex and Oilmin Energy at Burragorang, not far from the backwaters of Warragamba Dam, Sydney's biggest water storage.
About 200 locals have attended the protest meeting and say the government did not have the courtesy to advise them work on the drill hole had started.
They say the first they know the hole was being sunk was when trucks started arriving and departing the drill site, which is near an abandoned coal mine.
The companies say if they can prove up sufficient reserves, the coal seam gas will be pumped to a processing plant near Camden and then sold into the Sydney energy market.
