United Nations experts will be presented with a petition that has more than 100,000 signatures on it, calling for an end to dredging and development near the Great Barrier Reef off Queensland.
The UNESCO delegation is in Cairns as part of a 10-day tour of the reef checking the impacts of coal and gas projects, before making recommendations to the World Heritage Committee.
Lobby group Get Up says there is global concern about the impact of development on the Great Barrier Reef and will give its petition to the experts today.
Get Up spokesman Paul Oosting says nothing has been done to protect the reef.
"We think at the upcoming meeting in June, UNESCO should list the reef as endangered - that properly reflects what the science is telling us," he said.
