YOU know it's strange times when you see Friends of the Earth, the Greens, GetUp and farmers referenced in the one breath – and not a mention of ‘loggerheads’.
While professional lobbying group GetUp may have left a sour taste in the mouths of those involved in the Top End cattle industry – those on the receiving end of a metropolitan backlash against the cruelty uncovered in Indonesian abattoirs and aired by ABC's Four Corners – it seems that high stakes make for strange bedfellows.
Just as the warring city states of Greece united to end the Persian invasion, so have some unlikely allies come together against the common enemy of coal seam gas (CSG) mining.
How conscious each faction is of the other's involvement in fighting off the intrusive techniques of gas companies is less certain. Have farmers noticed that several groups with whom they rarely share alliance “have their back” so to speak, or are all parties merely tolerating the banners of others in what has become a prominent national campaign?
