Commission Urges a Closer Look at Mining's Effects on Water

The National Water Commission is urging governments to look at the impact on water supplies of coal seam gas and other mining.

Its report comes as the controversial gas exploration faces pressure in State and Federal Parliaments, and from farmers worried that prime agricultural land will be lost.

Water Commission chair Chloe Munro says at the moment, governments can deal with mining expansion and its effects on water as separate issues.

"But we think it's a much better approach to not follow that exception," she said.
