THE big news from the NSW budget is that the Hunter Region may soon have the privilege of providing even more money to keep the state afloat.
Premier Barry O'Farrell wants to raise the state's mining royalty tax rates, a move that inevitably means the Hunter - as the black coal capital of NSW - will be sending even more dollars to Sydney.
On one level there's some justification. The Gillard government has turned a deaf ear to complaints from NSW that its black coal power stations will be hard hit by a carbon tax. Brown coal generators in Victoria are in line for financial help, but in NSW the impact of the tax will be reduced dividends and asset value. Read More
