Farmer fears coal threatens bore

ALPHA farmer Peter Anderson is concerned his almost 100-year-old bore will dry up after a report on the Alpha Coal project stated the mine could permanently alter ground water levels in the region.

The Coordinator-General's report on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Central Queensland's Alpha Coal project states the mine has the potential to alter ground water heights, impacting on water bores.

"The current mining application has the potential to temporarily or permanently alter the groundwater table, which provides some water security during drought," it stated.
The report has Mr Anderson worried.

He said the region relied so heavily on bore water that any impact on the quality or availability of underground water stores would be disastrous.

"It'll have a horrendous impact if those bores were to go dry or the quality of the water was affected," he said.
