Battle continues to protect area from coal mining





When LD Operation's bid to mine coal in Margaret River earlier this year was rejected, local farmer and anti-coal mining campaigner Brent Watson thought it was the end of the fight.
"All of us breathed a sigh of relief," he said.

"It felt like we had won that battle and that would change the way things were done done here from that point on.

"We were getting assurances from the Premier that he would legislate to protect this region from mining so we were pretty happy with that."

Despite the State Government's rejection, 25 applications for coal licenses are now pending and a number of international companies such as Western Coal have been granted multiple exploration licences in the region.

The Greens say that's 25 applications too many.
