UN reef mission in Mackay for development probe

The Mackay community will meet environmental experts from the United Nations today to discuss port and mining developments in the north Queensland region.

Delegates from the World Heritage Committee are investigating the impacts of development on the Great Barrier Reef.

They are due to meet delegations from Indigenous, environmental, resource and agricultural organisations today.

Mackay Conservation Group spokeswoman Patricia Julien wants to raise concerns about port expansions and the impact of dredging.

"The Queensland and Australian governments are just going to have to say, 'are we really doing as much as we possibly can?'.

"Once the report comes back from UNESCO, the ball will be in their court."
