Environmental groups have taken their concerns over coal and coal-seam gas
development to the Brisbane electorate of Ashgrove, where LNP leader Campbell
Newman is attempting to win a seat in parliament.
Hundreds of farmers and environmentalists protested outside the offices of Mr
Newman and Labor MP Kate Jones, who currently holds the seat.
Protest organiser Drew Hutton, president of the Lock the Gate Alliance, said
it was important to bring the issue to the city.
“The Ashgrove electorate is probably the pivotal electorate for this campaign
given that it has a high profile Labor candidate and the leader of the LNP,” Mr
Hutton said.
He said that he supports the Greenpeace-led campaign to raise up to $6
million to disrupt and delay new coalmines and infrastructure in a bid to make
some unviable.
“What Greenpeace is saying is that they need to follow the example set by
Lock the Gate, which is to engage the community,” he said.
“I applaud that.”
