A moratorium on seabed mining has been declared for coastal waters of the Northern Territory in Australia.

The Northern Territory Government decision means exploration and mining applications relating to the sea bed will not be granted until 2015.

The move has been taken to allow for an environmental impact assessment to be completed.

The moratorium does not include petroleum or gas exploration and production, and port development activities.

Late last month, NT Chief Minister Paul Henderson said if mining companies are allowed to explore in Territory waters, they will have to meet strict environmental requirements.

Mr Henderson says companies can apply for licences but the government will not necessarily give them approval.
