Bob Katter's Australian Party Queensland party says members of the Liberal National
Party are following senior member George Andrew in leaving amid claims it is
trying to stifle debate on coal seam gas (CSG) mining.
Katter’s Australian Party Queensland leader Aidan McLindon says the new party
has signed at least six former LNP members in the past four weeks.
It comes after the resignation of a senior LNP member, who has accused the
party of trying to stifle debate on CSG mining and hiding its true
intentions.
George Andrew, chairman of the Christmas Creek/Tamrookum branch, quit the LNP
over what he called a staggering directive to stifle debate on CSG mining ahead
of the March 24 election.
Mr Andrew said he was told at a February branch meeting in Beaudesert that
LNP headquarters did not want members discussing the CSG issue.
CSG mining is a hot-button subject in the Scenic Rim seat of Beaudesert,
which the LNP is trying to wrest from Mr McLindon, himself a LNP defector.
Mr McLindon on Tuesday said many LNP members in the Beaudesert electorate
were unhappy with the party and its leader, Campbell Newman, over the CSG
issue.
He said at least six LNP members had defected to Katter’s Australian Party in
the past four weeks.
“Mr Newman is extremely good at being cunningly deceitful in putting 50 cents
each way,” he said.
“I think his duplicity is going to catch up with him.”
Mr Andrew agrees the LNP can’t be believed on CSG.
