A bill for a moratorium on coal seam gas activity in New South Wales has been defeated in state parliament's Upper House.
The bill was introduced by the Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.
While Labor supported the bill, the Christian Democrats and Shooters Party joined with Coalition MPs to defeat it.
Shoalhaven based Christian Democrat Paul Green says he didn't vote for it because he wants to wait until the May 5 when a parliamentary inquiry into coal seam gas is handed down.
"It wasn't about whether we agree or disagree, it was on the fact that we thought it was premature of the inquiry which has been quite extensive throughout NSW", he said.
