Gloucester earmarked for CSG investigation

Anti-coal seam gas campaigners at Gloucester have applauded the Federal Government for earmarking the region for an independent scientific investigation.

The Federal Government has committed $150 million to establish an independent expert committee to assess possible impacts of CSG activity in sensitive locations.

Gary Smith from the Barrington Gloucester Stroud Preservation Alliance says he is hopeful mining approvals could be withheld if they're found to be detrimental to the environment.

"We've been on a long campaign now some four years, pushing the incredible difficulties of extracting coal seam gas in the Gloucester Basin because of it's very fragile, complicated geology," he said.
