Concern on levy's impact on trade

THE Port of Townsville yesterday backed concerns that proposals to impose a levy on dredge spoils from commodities ports around the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park could undermine trade through Queensland's ports.
The port's chief executive, Barry Holden, said while the port did not dispose of dredged material in the park, he was concerned about the way the plan for the levy was announced "and the impact any such charge will have on trade through Queensland ports".

"A four-paragraph letter of advice inviting comment within 14 days provides neither sufficient information nor time for proper and appropriate consultation on a matter of such significance to ports and their customers," Mr Holden said.

"We are awaiting further advice from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority so as to fully understand the justification and rationale for the charge."
