Gas industry oils the wheels

Coal seam gas producers say they are spending $1 million a week in sponsorship of community groups in gas-rich regions as they face resistance from farmers and environmentalists to the growing industry.

As the resources industry seeks to counter a new national plan against coalmines drawn up by Greenpeace campaigner John Hepburn, the full scale of the resources boom was evident in Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics data showing the sector's exports surged 15 per cent last calendar year to $190 billion, The Australian Financial Review reports.

The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association chief operating officer eastern division, Rick Wilkinson, said the coal seam gas industry was attempting to win over local communities through consultation and investment.

Last year, he said, the industry created 13 jobs a day, held 543 meetings with local communities, spent $30,000 a minute on capital investment and more than $50 million on sponsorship of community and sporting groups.
